If fireworks aren't your thing, or your kids aren't ready for a late night, there are other great (and messy) ways to celebrate the holiday—like this fun ending to a recent photoshoot. Set up a large drop cloth or canvas (pin it up in any stye you fancy, a clothing line and some clothespins does the trick) and have the kids paint their own fireworks. Let it dry overnight and you have some new artwork to hang in your playroom or kids' bedrooms!
If you're looking to get out of Dodge but don't have any plans yet, we recently spent a weekend up at Camp Wandawega in southern Wisconsin. It's like an old-school summer camp for the whole family, and it has just the right amount of nostalgia mixed with fun summer and lake activities.
And of course, there's always heading down to the Chicago lakefront to grill up some brats and soak up the summer. (If it ever warms up, that is.) The weather forecast looks good, so let's enjoy it while it lasts. Maybe I'll see you at the beach!
